Ecolodge Design

Virunga National Park, Rwanda

Sabyinyo Lodge is located on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda and adjacent to the world-famous Virunga National Park. It is located in one of the most beautiful sites in Africa and has views of six volcanoes – Sabyinyo, Karizimbi, Bisoke, Mikeno, Muhabura and Gahinga.

HM Design consulted on the site planning and building architectural design of a luxury ecolodge on a four-acre property and prepared a Conceptual Master Plan which included Reception and office building, luxury villas, wellness center, main building with volcano viewing tower, tea pavilion, massage and meditation pavilion, organic vegetables and fruit garden etc. The architectural form of the villas was inspired by the peaks of Sabyinyo Volcano of the villas which were proposed to be built with locally resourced volcanic stones, eucalyptus poles so as to give them a mountain cabin aesthetic. This lodge was built and is operated by Governors Camp but is owned by the local community trust that use revenue generated from the lodge to drive socio-economic projects. This lodge bears no resemblance to the planning and design approach mentioned above.
