HM Design was registered as a multi-disciplinary office, exactly 30 years ago in Nairobi, Kenya. The first office was a dining table in an apartment building in the quaint neighborhood of Kileleshwa. That “office” overlooked the Kerichwa Ndogo River and was THE first step of HM Design! As Lao Tzu wrote, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’”. Since the first step was taken, what an awesome journey it has been!
The office needed more human power and space, so we separated home and office and moved to another neighborhood where the office overlooked into…….yes…..another river! And not just any river but the main river of the City – Nairobi River. After several other “steps”, we are currently in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and in an office that overlooks into the Middle River! You can say that we have always loved the energy of flowing water. We totally believe in the “river” quote below from Herman Hesse’s book Siddhartha. In this time of COVID, HM Design is sure living in the present…..just like the river!
We want to take this opportunity to thank each one of you who have been involved with HM Design’s growth from day one. Whether you were a client, staff, a consultant, an associate, a friend, a fan, an intern, landlord, family member etc., A BIG THANK YOU! We see ourselves having reached half of our journey and are extremely excited for the rest ‘500 miles’! To celebrate this momentous anniversary, we have created this short video of the history of the firm. We are known for our parties so please view the video and enjoy the live musicians and make sure that you go to the end where there is an invitation for you!
For those who might be interested to know about the background music for our 30th Anniversary celebration video, we are featuring two of Africa’s great musicians – Thapelo Khomo (South Africa) and Fela Kuti (Nigeria). The presentation starts with a background of the song “Spirit of Celebration” by Thapelo and ends with Fela’s “Water No Get Enemy” where the words depict the indispensability and usefulness of water in our daily life. Its sure fits in well with the river theme of our message.
Be safe and healthy……and once again…..Thank You!
