House of Vanguard

Architecture

Nairobi, Kenya

House of Vanguard is located in Westlands and on Waiyaki Way.

“House of Vanguard”, an 11-story office building (75,000 ft2) was completed in 1991 and was the first Green Building in Kenya. Passive and active design techniques such as cross-ventilation, internal atriums, openable windows, sun-shading, double-glazed orientation, hanging planters, flat roof gardens etc were utilized to capture the wind, block the intense UV radiation and ensure that no artificial air conditioning was required during the hot months. The building is strategically located in Nairobi’s main highway. The climatic design makes good use of the north light but cuts out the strong and unpleasant south and west sun through the use of ‘hanging’ garden walls. All the offices and the penthouse look inwards into the atrium with a 9-story water glass-wall and plaza –fountain. Hitesh participated in the site analysis and design, constructed alternative study models and prepared schematic floor plans, elevations and sections.
