Aga Khan University Hospital Imaging Center

Landscape Design

Nairobi, Kenya

This Imaging Center is located at the junction of Muthithi Rd. and Chiromo Lane in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya.

Because the original use of this property was a nursery school (Jack and Jill) and the fact that there were many mature tree species, there were quite a few site planning challenges to locate a medical facility which requires more car spaces and different vehicular route requirements such as ambulances. Additionally, because of the high-magnetic powers of an MRI machine, the parking had to be minimum of 10m away from the machine. By not cutting any tree on the site, the project had an instant ambience during opening. And instead of cutting down the trees, they were accentuated even during the construction process – an artist painted the shadows of 4-5 trees onto the Site office bringing to life the trees onto the office wall. HM Design provided Site Planning and Landscape Design services from concept to construction supervision. Landscape BQ’s were prepared and a specialized landscape contractor was selected after a bidding process.
