Amity Eco-Shack

Ecolodge Design

North Stradbroke Island, Australia

Amity Eco-Shacks are part of the Amity Campsite located in the northwest tip of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. The camping site is owned by the aboriginal Quandamooka people who are the traditional owners of the island which is a one-hour ferry ride east from the mainland.

HM Design was the Landscape Architect and a member of the Architect’s team led by Australian eco-Architect – Paul Pholeros. The existing camping site is in a fragile location and with high visitor usage (one of the most popular camping sites in whole of Australia). The team’s approach was to demonstrate how an integrated master site planning and eco-design approach can increase the level of environmental protection, recognise cultural heritage values and improve the quality of holiday experience. The Overall Camping Site master plan included accommodations (eco-shacks, camper trailer and caravan sites, cabins, powered and unpowered tents), cooking stations, restrooms, play areas, beach boardwalks etc. The First-phase project – Eco-Glamping Shacks opened to the public in August 2014.
