Kwanari Ecolodge

Landscape Design

Castle Bruce, Dominica, West Indies

Kwanari Ecolodge is located on a bay a few kilometers north of Castle Bruce Village – eastern part of the Island of Dominica and facing the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated a few kms south of the ONLY native community (Kalinago) in the Caribbean.

HM Design is the lead Consultant, landscape architect and concept architect and an ecolodge in the eastern part of the Commonwealth of Dominica. It is the first planned and designed ecolodge in Dominica and there are many benefits to the neighboring native Kalinago people. Mr. Mehta is introducing a whole new type of Architecture in the Caribbean called “Forest Caribbean”. The landscape architect made four visits to the site to ensure that not one single healthy tree was cut during the construction process. Each building was carefully placed onto existing ecosystem so as to have minimal impact on existing vegetation and drainage. All new planting is with native species. HM Design and their local team of consultants (including Architect of Record) have provided full services including construction supervision. The master plan includes an ecolodge and wellness center, forest and ocean cabins, tree house, swimming pool, library and trails. The lodge was to open in the summer of 2018 but was partly destroyed by Super Hurricane Maria.
