Kyambura Gorge Lodge

Architecture

QE National Park, Uganda.

Located adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth National Park and overlooking the unique Kyambura Gorge which is the home of a troop of threatened Chimpanzees, the Kyambura Gorge Lodge also has views of the famed ‘mountains of the moon” – Ruwenzori. The site is situated in a buffer zone between National Park and local community farms.

HM Design was part of the initial Architect’s team that designed the first Ecolodge in Uganda. The client- Volcanoes Safaris, a Great Apes tour operator and lodge company, built and opened the lodge in 2011. The signature lodge building is a re-converted and re-furbished ‘coffee processing and drying shed’ which now houses the reception, lounge, dining/kitchen, bar and offices for the new lodge. The overall lodge design has strong environmental ethos: re-use of existing coffee factory buildings, solar power, dry-composting toilets, low- water consumption technology and environmentally friendly materials like thatch, clay bricks, local stone and volcanic rock. The New Villas were designed by Regional Associates. HM Design’s input was on a fixed day consultancy.
