P and S Shah Residence

Interior Architecture & Design

Nairobi, Kenya

P and S Residence is located in the Spring Valley suburb of Nairobi, Kenya.

The 6,000 ft2  Main House also includes a Jacuzzi, changing room and steam room. HM Design prepared interior architecture drawings (for all false ceilings, fixed cabinetry, lighting etc.) and facilitated project from inception to completion. The post-modern, yet culturally (Gujarati) and security sensitive design was inspired by philosophies shared by USA Architect Charles Moore and German-based BAUHAUS. Moore’s prophecies of placemaking and genius loci inspired us to lay all internal activities around a central Atrium Garden and water-fountain that provides light (from a skylight), fresh oxygen and creates convection cooling during the hot months. The sounds of the ‘waterfall” and “creek” shapes the experience of place. The atrium has provided this house with a feeling of space and creates a dynamic and stimulating interior that provides shelter from the external environment while maintaining a visual link with that environment. The BAUHAUS inspired the main design theme and motif that pervades right through the building architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture – a juxtaposition of three perfect shapes – square, circle, and triangle.
